Personal Trainer’s Who Have Done It!


I am very lucky to have the most amazing clients and they are not just clients, they are all great friends as well.

It is easy for me to write about what you need to do to grow your personal training business however sometimes it can have a greater impact when you hear it from personal trainers who have just done it and gone through the ups and downs. This is the first part of a series of everyday personal training business becoming very successful by taking action.

Adam and Jared from Essential Personal Training in Davenport Tasmania have come along way in the last 2 years.  They have grown their business from 50 sessions per week to a consistent 170 which grows weekly!

Here is their story:

Our personal training experience started off in 2003 in Devonport, a small town in Tasmania where Adam was a one man operation. He quickly become booked out and the personal training business continued to grow, so much so that he was booked out and had a waiting list of over 70 people wanting to train with him. I finished my business degree at uni and went to help Adam out and from there our partnership was formed. It was not long after that I was booked out and again we had the same challenge, another solid waiting list! We decided to take it to the next level and put our first trainer on, this made a huge difference as we were so focused on training clients that we had limited opportunity to work on the business.

Now it may come across that this all happened so easily! Absolutely not. In 2008 we were so frustrated with our lack of growth and had reached a point where we were asking ourselves, ‘Where to now?’, What do we do next?  We had heard of Kellie and what she did for personal trainers and it sounded exactly what we were after, guidance, help and someone to keep us accountable as we do with our own clients.

Straight away we started seeing huge results and have since gone onto achieve personal bests in every aspect of the personal training studio.

Here is a list of what we have learnt:

1. Accountability has been the biggest advantage for us as we know that she will be following up to ensure that we do it! This alone has helped our business grow again another 60% in both turnover and profit in just the last financial year.

2. We needed help on how to get new clients and creative ideas for promotions and marketing. Also what strategies worked best for minimal outlay. Between the 3 of us we have transformed cool ideas that are unique especially for our local community. The other crucial key learnt was consistency of marketing, we were marketing randomly where ever and when ever, soon learnt that marketing needs to be something we do all of the time. Now we take a day every week to focus on it

3. Improving cash flow. This was also a HUGE learning curve, when we first started we had all our clients on packages, wow quickly learnt to get them all onto direct debit and that alone has saved us so much money, time, less paperwork and follow up. Best thing is we now know exactly how much money is coming in each week this = a lot less stress!

4. Have a referral strategy. We always knew our clients loved us yet we never really had a strategy in place for referrals. Soon changed that, the one and only referral strategy we used had to stop within a few weeks as we could not keep up with the sessions which resulted in a waiting list. Worked out perfect cause when our next trainer started they had a long list of leads to call, they to then had 30 sessions within a few weeks!

Now we are moving onto the next phase of the business and how to make more money without working harder!
